What is the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra?

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra "The great mantra that can conquer death", also called Trayambak-Mantra, is a verse composed to praise Lord Shiva which can be located in the section Rudra of Yajurveda.

tryambakaṃyyajāmahesugandhimpuṣṭṭivad rddhanam । urvvārukamivabandhanānnmṛttyormmukṣīyamāmṛtāt ।।

त्र्यम्बकंय्यजामहेसुगन्धिम्पुष्ट्टिवद् र्द्धनम् । उर्व्वारुकमिवबन्धनान्न्मृत्त्योर्म्मुक्षीयमामृतात् ।।

In this mantra, Shiva has been described as ‘the vanquisher of death’. Like the Gayatri Mantra it is one of the most widely known mantra of Sanatan Dharma. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is found in the Shukla Yajurveda. This great mantra dedicated to Shiva as a mortal can also be found in the Rigveda.

This mantra has many names and is polymorphic. This is called Rudra Mantra, drawing from the ferocious attribute of Shiva. Owing to Shiva’s three eyes, the name Trayambak-mantra has also been ascribed to it. It is also known as the Mrit-Sanjivani mantra, because it is believed that this is an element of the life restoring knowledge gained by the sage Shukra (Venus) after strict austerity and penance.

Sage-Munis have called the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra to be the heart of the Vedas.

In the Puranas and scriptures, there is a special mention of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for averting incurable diseases and avoiding premature death. There is a provision of 11 lakh Mantra chants in the Mahamrityunjaya mantra of 1.2 million chants of the Laghu Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
